#2 Coffee, Cemeteries & Comedy
This week’s picks: peaceful walks, great coffee, and a comedy night to lift your spirits
This past week, I’ve been making more of an effort to leave my phone at home when going for a walk. I usually listen to a podcast while on the move, so at first it felt a bit weird - because, what do I do now? But, with the risk of sounding cliché, you notice so much more when you’re not distracted by your phone or what’s playing on it. And that might come in handy with one of this week’s recommendations!

🎤 With everything that’s going on in the world, sometimes you just need a good old laugh. Luckily, you don’t have to stray far for your next comedy night! I actually have a few favs in the area, but I’ll start with the one I came across first: Angel Comedy. They have two venues close to each other but I want to talk about the one held in a small room upstairs at the Camden Head pub in Camden Passage.
Almost all their shows are free and it’s some of the best comedy I’ve seen - so it’s a win-win! It’s a classic set-up where an MC opens the night and introduce each of the three comedians. In my opinion, the MC is at least as funny as the 3 comedians, which makes for a very fun evening from beginning to end. Friday and Saturday will get you the best quality comedy, but it’s very popular - so plan ahead! My top tip: go for the 9.30pm show. Show up around 7pm to get your stamp and go for dinner in Camden Passage in the meantime.
If you do decide to go for dinner first, I highly recommend Kipferl. It’s a lovely Austrian restaurant - a rare find in London - and their Wiener Schnitzel is very tasty!
✟ Ok, hear me out on this one. Abney Park Cemetery is a park directly north of Church Street in Stoke Newington and is home to one of the ‘Seven Magnificent’ cemeteries in London. Maybe visiting a cemetery wasn’t exactly on your to-do list, but this one is well worth a visit. As soon as you step away from the bustling Church Street, you enter a park that has a fairy-tale feel - tall trees and plants overflowing on the paths. It soon splits out into many meandering paths throughout the park - easy to get lost in. That may sound a bit creepy given the purpose of the park, but it’s actually a lovely escape from the busy city.
☕️ One of my favourite things to do is to go to a coffee shop by myself and read a book. When it comes to good coffee shops we’re spoilt for choice in Islington, but my go-to is Le Maison Highbury on Calabria Road (just off Highbury Fields). It’s a beautiful blue corner building with plenty of space both inside and outside. If the weather is nice, I try to get a table outside. However, for those chillier days I love to take a seat at the long table alongside the window. It’s the perfect spot to sip your coffee, read a book and look out over the beautiful streets of Highbury. And in case you think it looks familiar: it was used in a scene in the Netflix series ‘One Day’!
Thanks for reading this edition of The Islington Edit. I’d love to hear your thoughts if you’ve visited any of these places or are planning to. And if you have any favourites yourself, please do share them too - just hit reply or leave a comment!
